Spring tune-up tips

Spring has sprung in Pittsburgh, and it's time to drag the bike out of the garage, basement or wherever it's been sitting feeling neglected for the last several months. But before you hop on the saddle and go for a spin, you'll want to make sure all your parts are in good working order. Here are some recommended things to check:

  • Visually inspect all major parts of the bike, look for any cracks in the frame, bent spokes, etc.
  • Check the air pressure in the tires. Bike that aren't ridden for long periods of time tend to loose air. Look on the side of the tire to see what PSI the tire should be inflated to.
  • Make sure all parts are good and tight. This included the bolts holding on the brakes and drive train, pedals and crank arms, and quick releases for the seat and wheels
  • Clean It! At least half of all maintenance on a bike is cleaning it. May not sound like much fun, but it's necessary. To give your bike a quick cleaning, give the frame, fork, wheels and handlebars a once over with some hot soapy water. Then make sure you clean out all of the pieces of the drivetrain with degreaser, and give the chain a good cleaning with a rag or a good chain cleaning system.
  • It's a good idea to take your bike for an easy spin up and down the driveway or road once before you take it out.
